So here's my newest idea. Combine a household food composter and a fuel cell. Its no Mr.Fusion, but it would both deal with landfill issues and power issues that are affecting this country.
Now, if you're thinking, fuel cells use hydrogen, whats that got to do with rotting food? the answer is everything, rotting food gives off methane which is just hydrogen tied to carbon. There are actually large scale methane and natural gas fuel cells in operation in California and other states.
Also, the two small scale technologies already exist. you can currently buy both a household food composter AND a science lab fuel cell for under $600 total.
I think someone like Cuisinart or GE or Whirlpool should pick this up and run with it.
I hope someone does.
